Why Tires Lose Pressure?

Why Tires Lose Pressure?

Tires can lose pressure for more than just a puncture!

Tires can Lose Pressure because of Damaged Wheels, Valve Stem Leaks and Temperature Fluctuation.

Flat tires are frustrating and there are so many reasons a Tire Loses Air! Something simple as drastic weather temperature changes to the dramatic Tire Blow Out can stop you in your tracks. Some Tire Issues can be prevented, while others are just part of life’s adventures. Let’s dive into some possible Tire Troubles and some Tire Care Tips!

Wheel Damage: Potholes, curbs, and other road hazards can damage the Wheel, or Rim, of your vehicle. Even minor damage can create an opening for air to leak through.

Bead Leak: The area where your tire meets the Rim is known as the Tire Bead Seat. Damage to the bead seat can allow for a Slow Air Leak and cause a Flat Tire over time. Disturbance to this area can be caused by things like Excessive Rust on The Rim, improper mounting, road debris, or contact with a curb.

Valve Stem Issues: The Valve Stem not only allows you to add air to the Tire but can also be the culprit of letting air leak out. A damaged Valve Stem, or loose Valve Stem Cap, can let air escape and cause a flat tire over time.

Temperature Fluctuations: As seasons change your Tire Pressure can fluctuate. Air expands in hot weather and contracts in cold temps. But don't be worried by a small drop in Tire Pressure on a cold morning as it should return to normal as the Tires warm up with driving and keep an eye on it throughout the day.

Permeation: Tire rubber is a seemingly solid barrier. However, age and weather can break down that rubber and allow for those tiny air molecules to seep through slowly over time.

You can help keep your tires inflated properly, get better gas mileage, and improve overall driving safety by understanding some reasons why Tires Lose Pressure and by following a few simple tips.

Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure Tips:

  • Have your Tires installed by Tire Professionals.
  • Routine Tire Rotations will allow your Mechanic to regularly inspect the condition of your Tires and Rims.
  • Carry a quality Tire Pressure Guage.
  • Regularly check your Tire Pressure, especially before long trips.
  • Check the vehicle owner's manual for the factory recommended tire pressure. It's also listed on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb.
  • Always carry a spare tire, which should also be inflated and set to the correct pressure.
